Vienna Hauptbahnhof Guide: Wien Hbf Transfers & Airport
Vienna Hauptbahnhof, written Wien Hbf, is the main departure point for many ÖBB domestic and international trains. For the U1, follow Südtiroler Platz–Hauptbahnhof signs. Check each train’s actual platform and allow a separate city journey if the next departure uses Westbahnhof or Wien Mitte.

Orient yourself before leaving the station
Follow the signs for U1, Südtiroler Platz–Hauptbahnhof if you are heading towards the central U-Bahn network. For an onward train, remain within the railway station and find its current platform on the departure displays. Save the train number: a Salzburg-bound service may display an onward final destination such as Munich or Innsbruck.
A station transfer is a separate journey. Wien Mitte/Landstraße and Wien Westbahnhof are not alternative names for Wien Hbf. If your next ticket starts at either station, include the local trip and the walk to the new platform when deciding whether the connection is practical.
Confirm that Wien Hbf is on your itinerary
Read the departure and arrival station on every train segment. Some journeys start at another Vienna station, and moving between stations requires a separate local trip. If you have booked a hotel described as near the station, compare its actual address with your arrival exit and walking route rather than relying only on the marketing name.
Find the correct departure
At the station, match train number and departure time before following the platform sign. The destination shown on the board can be beyond your own stop. Check announcements for platform changes and keep your ticket accessible. A previously saved platform number is a planning aid, not a guarantee on the travel day.
Allow a realistic interchange
Review the time between your arriving and departing trains and whether you must change platforms. Luggage, children, unfamiliar surroundings or lift use can make a short connection uncomfortable. If a long-distance train is late, consult the operator about the next step and the conditions of your tickets rather than assuming every later train is automatically valid.
Connect with Vienna Airport
Railjet and Intercity connect Wien Hbf with Flughafen Wien in about 15 minutes; the dated timetable determines the exact service. During the 2026–2027 construction work, REX7 also links the airport with Wien Hbf in about 20 minutes.
From 7 September 2026 until October 2027, airport S7 trains terminate at Wien St. Marx, not Wien Mitte. CAT uses replacement buses from 24 August 2026 to 31 October 2027. These changes do not turn Wien Mitte into the same station as Wien Hbf. When flying out, work backwards from the airline’s required terminal arrival time and add the platform-to-terminal walk.
Plan the city journey and station facilities
Use an official local journey planner for your hotel, meeting or attraction address. Check ÖBB station information for current orientation and facilities, including luggage storage and accessibility where available. Verify the service you need and its hours before relying on it. A general main-station guide cannot confirm the availability of a particular locker or lift.
Plan a stopover with luggage at Wien Hbf
If you have time between trains, decide in advance how you will handle your bags. Check the official ÖBB station information for luggage storage, its opening hours and accessibility, and confirm the service is available on the day rather than assuming it. Keep your luggage with you or use verified storage, and build in enough margin to return to the correct departure platform — including the walk, any lifts and a possible platform change — before your onward train leaves.
Prepare for longer onward journeys
For Salzburg, Innsbruck or another city, compare the complete connection from Wien Hbf and check whether it runs direct. Where AustriaTrain displays a bookable fare, review the passenger total, fare conditions and included reservations before continuing. A timetable result or quote does not reserve a seat, and payment alone does not confirm ticket issuance. If the route or product is not offered, check with the operator. Check any missed-connection protection in the terms of the actual ticket or combination of tickets.
Vienna Hbf to the city centre: use your actual address
Choose the local route to your hotel or attraction rather than treating the city centre as one stop. Include the station exit, walk to U1 or another connection, and the final walk. If you have luggage or need a lift, check the practical route. A mainline rail fare should not be assumed to include all urban transport unless that coverage is explicitly stated.
